Pattern written in US Crochet terms

Skill Level:

Easy (shaping, working in the round, colorwork stripes)

Materials

  • Yarn: Yarnspirations Red Heart Super Saver (Worsted/Medium Weight #4; 100% acrylic fibers; 364yds/198g): C1 Cherry, C2 White, C3 Royal, C4 Gold, C5 Cornmeal, and C6 Bright Yellow
  • Hook: US G/6 (4mm) or size needed to create tight stitches
  • Notions: Stuffing, Yarn Needle, Scissors, Ruler

Finished Size

Approximately 1.5” W x 4” H x 1.5” D excluding pom pom

Gauge

Rnds 1-3 = approximately 1.5” W x 1.5” H
Gauge for this project is less important than making sure the stuffing doesn’t show through your
stitches. Use the hook size and tension you need to create tight stitches.

Stitches/Terms Used

  • Back Loop Only (blo)
  • Chain Stitch (ch)
  • Decrease (dec)
  • Increase (inc)
  • Reverse Slip Knot
  • Round (rnd)
  • Single Crochet (sc)
  • Slip Stitch (sl st)

Special Stitch Definitions

  • Increase (inc): Work 2 sc in one stitch.
  • Decrease (dec): Single crochet two stitches together.
  • Reverse Slip Knot: Create a loop with the working yarn in front of the non-working tail. Insert two fingers into the loop from the back and pull the non-working tail partially through to form a new loop. While still holding the new loop, pull the working end of the yarn to tighten the knot. Slip the loop over your hook and pull the non-working tail to tighten.

Notes

  • This project uses small amounts of yarn and can easily be treated as a stash buster. You’ll need yarns of similar weights in red, white, and blue, as well as a few shades of yellow or orange. Keep in mind that using different yarn than the pattern may change the gauge, finished size, and needed hook size.
  • I use the Reverse Slip Knot method to start the pattern. Use whatever starting
method you’re comfortable with, including Magic Ring, Adjustable Loop, or chain ring.
  • Beginning chains do not count as stitches throughout the pattern. Work the first sc of
the round into the first sc of the previous round (ie the same stitch you joined to).
  • This pattern is worked in joined rounds to better achieve straight lines. For a more
seamless look, I recommend pulling the joining slip stitch tight before working the ch 1,
or using your preferred method for a seamless join.
  • To achieve a more seamless color change, I also recommend changing to the new
color on the last movement of the last sc of the round and working the sl st join with the
    new color as instructed.
  • Since the colors change most rounds, I recommend not fastening off after each
color change. Instead, pull the new color up from the round below to start the new
    round.
